Werner Sylten <\/span>provided<\/span> young girls with a new home in a <\/span>reformatory<\/span>\u2014later, he helped Christians persecuted as Jews to flee abroad from the Nazis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Influenced by a liberal theology, Werner Sylten, a pastor, felt particularly committed to those dependent on <\/span>relief<\/span> and charity. For several years <\/span>beginning in<\/span> 1925, he ran a welfare <\/span>facility<\/span> in Bad K\u00f6stritz for socially <\/span>vulnerable,<\/span> underage girls. In the <\/span>process<\/span>, the <\/span>staunch supporter of<\/span> reform <\/span>education<\/span> modernised the Thuringian girls’ home with numerous training and leisure activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylten <\/span>was<\/span> dismissed from his positon in Nazi Germany in 1936 <\/span>due to<\/span> his father Alfred Sylten\u2014formerly Silberstein\u2014<\/span>being<\/span> a Jew who had converted to Christianity. As a member of the Confessing Church, which acted against the Nazi-affine regional church leadership of Thuringia, Sylten actively resisted the National Socialist persecution of Jews. Together with his pastor colleague Heinrich Gr\u00fcber, he helped Christians “racially” considered Jews according to Nazi legislation to flee to foreign countries considered safe <\/span>at that time<\/span>. By the beginning of the Second World War, more than 1,000 people had been <\/span>rescued<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1941, the illegal <\/span>Berliner B\u00fcro f\u00fcr Fluchthilfe<\/span><\/i> (Berlin Office for Escape A<\/span>id<\/span>), headed by Gr\u00fcber, was closed by the Nazis. Werner Sylten was deported to the Dachau concentration camp and <\/span>put into<\/span> forced labour. In 1942, due to illness, he was brought to Hartheim near Linz on the so-called <\/span>Invalidentransport<\/span><\/i> (lit. invalid transport, a.k.a. Action 14f13) and shortly afterwards murdered in the “euthanasia” killing centre in Hartheim Castle. His numerous letters from the concentration camp are a moving testimony to resistance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
