For several years <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">beginning in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 1925, he ran a welfare <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">facility<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Bad K\u00f6stritz for socially <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">vulnerable,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> underage girls. In the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">staunch supporter of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> reform <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">education<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> modernised the Thuringian girls&#8217; home with numerous training and leisure activities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sylten <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> dismissed from his positon in Nazi Germany in 1936 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">due to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> his father Alfred Sylten\u2014formerly Silberstein\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">being<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a Jew who had converted to Christianity. As a member of the Confessing Church, which acted against the Nazi-affine regional church leadership of Thuringia, Sylten actively resisted the National Socialist persecution of Jews. Together with his pastor colleague Heinrich Gr\u00fcber, he helped Christians &#8220;racially&#8221; considered Jews according to Nazi legislation to flee to foreign countries considered safe <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at that time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. By the beginning of the Second World War, more than 1,000 people had been <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rescued<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1941, the illegal <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Berliner B\u00fcro f\u00fcr Fluchthilfe<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (Berlin Office for Escape A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">id<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), headed by Gr\u00fcber, was closed by the Nazis. Werner Sylten was deported to the Dachau concentration camp and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">put into<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> forced labour. In 1942, due to illness, he was brought to Hartheim near Linz on the so-called <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Invalidentransport<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (lit. invalid transport, a.k.a. Action 14f13) and shortly afterwards murdered in the &#8220;euthanasia&#8221; killing centre in Hartheim Castle.
