Even after the National Socialists seized power, Helmy did not give up his responsibility towards his Jewish patients, treating them at home from then on. In addition, the Cairo humanist, a victim of discrimination in Germany as a &#8220;non-Aryan&#8221;, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">derided<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the Nazi leadership, and was dismissed from his position and arrested. Since the German leadership saw Arab countries as potential allies in the Second World War, Helmy was released in the course of diplomatic negotiations. Instead of returning to Cairo, he <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">remained<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Berlin to help <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">those<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> persecuted by the Nazis. Among other things, he <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">enabled<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Germans and so-called <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fremdarbeiter<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (foreign workers) to take sick leave in order to protect <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">such<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> patients from being called up for the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Volkssturm<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (lit. &#8220;people\u2019s storm&#8221;, emergency <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">army<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> conscripted from non-military ranks) or <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">excessively hard<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">labour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1942, he took in Anna Boros, a Jew, and passed her off as his niece. In the Wilmersdorf Mosque, a centre of Muslim life in Berlin attracting people of all religions, she received an official <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">document<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 1943 identifying her as a devout Muslim. Boros survived the Shoah, emigrated to New York and became a nurse. According to her own statement, she was &#8220;grateful for all eternity&#8221; to her rescuer.
