With her poetry, May Ayim <\/span>sought<\/span> to make visible social conditions for which no words have yet been found.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

May Ayim was a poet, scholar and activist in Black feminist and Afro-German movements. She is considered one of the pioneers of Critical Whiteness <\/span>Studies<\/span> in Germany, which criticises the invisible “White” norm and analyses racism as a structural privilege of “White” people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 1980s, she established contacts with representatives of the international Black women’s movement. In 1984, she <\/span>became<\/span> one of the co-founders of the <\/span>Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland<\/span><\/i> (Initiative of Black People in Germany). With Farbe bekennen. Afro-deutsche Frauen auf den Spuren ihrer Geschichte” (<\/span>Eng. publication title: <\/span>Showing Our Colours: Afro-German Women Speak Out<\/span><\/i>), together with Katharina Oguntoye and Dagmar Schultz, she laid the first literary milestone in Black German historiography in 1986. With these investigations, she carried out groundbreaking scientific work on the history and present of Black Germans. She is internationally recognised for this research and for her political poetry on racism. Her best-known books of poetry include <\/span>grenzenlos und unversch\u00e4mt<\/span><\/i> (1997, Eng.: <\/span>borderless<\/span> and <\/span>brazen<\/span>), <\/span>blues in schwarz-weiss<\/span><\/i> (1995, Eng.: <\/span>blues in black and white<\/span>) and <\/span>nachtgesang<\/span><\/i> (1997, Eng.: <\/span>nightsong<\/span>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In January 1996, she suffered a mental breakdown. In August <\/span>of the same year<\/span>, she committed suicide at the age of 36.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
